We all feel good buying things made in the USA. It makes us feel patriotic; we are supporting our country, creating jobs and getting higher quality products.
Lately, terrifying stories have been circulating the internet that give us new motivation to purchase products made in the USA, but it’s not as simple as it sounds. Articles, blogs and facebook posts have been popping up everywhere about pets getting extremely sick and even dying from their treats or contaminated food. The scariest part is that some of these brands were labeled “made in the USA”! It turns out that this claim is pretty easy to make. Even if the ingredients come from another country, like China, the product can still claim to be USA made. Scary, right? The company is not required to pass this on to the consumers in any way. The good news is that the companies that are using quality ingredients from the US and Canada are happy to share the information about where they source their raw materials and how they make their products.
Reading labels on packaging can help, but it isn’t enough. The best way to find out if a pet food or treat is safe for your pet is to do the research, or let a trusted source do it for you. I contact companies and directly ask the hard questions to make sure they meet the standards that I want to give to my own pets.
